Nit-Nem is a collection of selected Sikh hymns that are designated to be read by the Sikhs every day at pre-fixed times. It normally includes the Gurbani which is read daily by Sikhs in the morning, evening and at night.
The initiated Sikh is asked by the Panj Piare during the Amrit Sanchar ceremony to recite the following five banis every morning as a commitment to the Sikh Gurus and Waheguru.
The Five Banis are: Japji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Tav-Prasad Savaiye, Chaupai and Anand Sahib —these banis are usually recited daily by all devoted Sikhs in the early morning.
Rehras and Kirtan Sohila are recited in the evening.
Sukhmani Sahib is the set of hymns divided into 24 sections which appear in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, on ang 262. Each section, which is called an Ashtpadi(asht means 8), consists of 8 hymns per Ashtpadi. The word Sukhmani literally means Treasure (Mani) of Peace (Sukh). This set of Hymns or Bani is very popular among the Sikhs, who frequently recite it in their places of worship called Gurdwaras and at home. The full recital takes about 90 minutes and is normally undertaken by everyone in the congregation.
